Backfilling. To keep your wall clean, spread landscape fabric up against the wall before backfilling. Backfill the area behind the wall in layers, with gravel against the wall and fill dirt behind it, firmly tamping down each layer. Finish with a layer of topsoil.
Instructions. With the layout marked, you can begin digging the trench. If the trench slopes, you’ll have to step up or down to keep the blocks level. Tamp down the dirt with a hand tamper and keep it level. Fill the trench with about 3 inches of paver base, spread it with a rake, and tamp it down.
Sweep away all debris from the top of the first course of block with a broom. Stack the second course of blocks on top of the first course making sure they remain level. Fill the concrete cores with crushed gravel. Backfill with gravel behind the wall to cover the drainage pipe.
